One of the most frequently asked questions among those who switch to a gluten-free diet is how to safely travel while living gluten-free. We asked resident dietitian and Director of Nutritional Services for Dr. Schar USA, Dr. Anne, to help answer this question in our new video series #AskAnne.
Anne's first recommendation is always to go - but leave the country! Actually travel in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada is far easier due to the increased awareness of celiac disease and the gluten-free diet. That said, you should always do your homework before traveling. Here are a few key steps once you have decided your destination. Contact the local celiac support group, requesting a list of restaurants that safely offer gluten free menus. You will also want to know if gluten free products are typically carried in the pharmacy or in the regular grocery stores - this varies country to country. You will also want to have a small card in the native language that states you have celiac and describes what you can and cannot eat. When you choose your hotel - find one that offers a kitchenette or at least a refrigerator and a microwave not only will you save some money on eating out - but it also ensures some peace of mind. If you are not comfortable going it alone - there are several travel groups, resorts, and cruise lines that offer gluten free options and/or packages. Most important is to go and enjoy.
