An Awesome Way to Taste the World in 28 Sandwiches

Sandwiches are a staple food choice for many Americans, but did you know that different cultures have perfected their own sandwiches around the world? Gluten-free blogger and personal chef Melissa Bess Reed of the Gluten-Free Lifestyle Series shares her favorites, all of which can be made on Schar bakery breads!

By the 1920s in the United States there was the amazing Reuben Sandwich with its delicious sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, dressing and sauerkraut on rye bread. Here's what the rest of the world is eating! Not all of these are gluten-free, but we hope to inspire you with delicious sandwiches that can easily become GF!


Argentina has the Choripan with chimichurri and chorizo filling.


Amsterdam has Broojes. There are many varieties but a popular one is with Turkey and Brie, often served with a beer.

Brazil has the Bauru, which is filled with cheese, roast beef and pickled veggies.

Belgium has Smos and these are filled with egg, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, gherkins, ham and cheese.


Canada has the Nova Scotia Donair which consists of beef, tomato, onion and donair sauce inside a flat bread.


Chile has the Chacarero which is served with pork, green beans and chili pepper on a round style roll.



China has Bao which is an Asian sugar dough filled with pork or duck.


Denmark has their Smorrebrod which is a beautiful open faced sandwich served with layers of vegetables, eggs, cold lunch meats thin sliced or other fillings.


England has the Chip Buttie with potato fries and ketchup in two pieces of bread.


France has the Jambon Beurre which is a baguette filled with sweet butter and sliced pink ham.


Finland Porilainen which is stuffed with sausage, onions and ketchup.


Germany has the Butterbrot filled with sweet butter and ham.


Haiti has the Haitian Steak Sandwich which is filled with seasoned ground beef, onions and white cheese on Haitian Bread.


India have the Paratha Rolls which are sandwiches made from a flat bread with meat and vegetable filling.


Italy has the Submarine Sandwich, a classic served around the world in a white long bread roll sliced in half and filled with meat, cheese, vegetables and condiments often with a Italian oil dressing over the filling.


Ireland has the Irish Crisp which is sliced bread with butter and potato chips inside.


Japan has the Katsu-sando this is filled with pork cutlets inside a soft sliced white bread.


Korea has the pulled pork or Korean BBQ Bulgogi sandwich on a soft round bun with sauce.


Mexico has the Torta Ahogada filled with tender pork pieces and is dipped into a chili broth or soaked in it.


Portugal has a Bifana which is filled with pork cutlets.


Scotland has their version called Pieces which is filled with pork, stuffing and apple sauce.


Switzerland has their Swedish Thin Bread Roll which is stuffed with sausage and mashed potatoes.


Singapore offers the Roti John which is filled with mutton, onion and masala then dipped in egg and fried in a pan.


Tunasia has the Casse-croute which is a baguette filled with tuna, eggs, potatoes, vegetables and Harissa spread.


Turkey has a Shawarma that is a pita filled with sliced meat vegetables and tahini.


Vietnam has the Bahn Mi which is a baguette filled with meat, pickled vegetables and cilantro.


Enjoy being creative with your sandwich, even if you are gluten-free you can still enjoy the fun using Schar Gluten-free bread selections!
