One of the most frequently asked questions among those who switch to a gluten-free diet is at what age they can be diagnosed with celiac disease. We asked resident dietitian and Director of Nutritional Services for Dr. Schar USA, Dr. Anne, to help answer this question in our new video series #AskAnne.
Individuals can be diagnosed with celiac disease at any age. Children most often present early in life with the classic symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, bloating and even failure to thrive once gluten has been introduced into the diet. The antibody tests however are not as reliable for children under three years of age. For children under three a complete panel of tTg, EMA, DGP, and total IgA as well as the gene test should be done.
